WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE

The last couple of weeks, we’ve had the chance to become primary teachers for once in our lives, specifically in Graciela’s class, 5th B, helping out in Drama and Songs.

The first day we got there we were able to observe how the class worked and what kind of methods they use to teach 10 years old students. The kids were singing songs and reading the script from The Witches ( Roald Dahl ), which is the theater play they are working on.

Our task there consisted on improving their pronunciation and broaden their vocabulary.
They had a listening exam that we collected and corrected in which they had to fill in the gaps in order to complete the lyrics of the songs.

The second day the class was quite different. María Contreras went to another classroom with two kids who played the main roles, and they practiced their lines. Firstly they read the script so that María could get an idea of how well they knew their lines, how was their pronunciation and fluency. Secondly they went through the first act and the revised those words which were more difficult to pronounce. They read the act a couple of times so they could learn their lines, by the end of the lesson they were able to act their parts without reading the script.

While María was doing that, the rest of us joined Graciela’s group at the theater where we prepared a game. Our goal was to help kids with the spelling of some words that were harder for them to write on the test. The game started by dividing them in two groups, each group had to write a letter on each flashcard with the objective of forming the previously chosen words. Each group was organized in a queue and they had to run to pick up a flashcard of the other team and set it up on the table to create the word.

On our last day as assistants Graciela divided the tasks again, María went with the boy and grandmama and they spend the whole hour acting and revising the hardest words and lines of the script. The rest of us helped three kids reading their scripts and correcting their intonation and pronunciation.

To sum up, we could say that the children weren’t the only ones who learnt with this experience, we learnt as well. The most important thing we gained was how to better communicate with the youngsters in a way that they could understand us. We have to bear in mind we don’t have the same level in English so we needed to adjust our English for the kids. This experience will help us to know how to adapt the language to the different situations in life.

We really are thankful for your follow-up throughout this journey and we hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have. It has been a short yet amazing experience but sadly the project is coming to its end.
Being all said and done, “Insiders” says goodbye.

Cuando todo está dicho y hecho

Las últimas dos semanas hemos tenido la oportunidad de convertirnos en profesores de primaria, especialmente en la clase de Graciela, 5º B, ayudando en Drama &Songs.
El primer día pudimos observar cómo la clase trabajaba y el tipo de metodologías que utilizaba para enseñar a alumnos de 10 años. Los niños estaban cantando canciones y leyendo el guión de “Las Brujas” de Roald Dahl, que es la obra de teatro en la que están trabajando. Nuestra misión consistía en mejorar su pronunciación y aumentar su vocabulario. Ellos tenían un examen de listening que recogimos y corregimos en el que tenían que rellenar los huecos para completar las letras de las canciones.
El segundo día, la clase fue muy diferente. María Contreras se fue a otra clase con dos niños que representaban dos de los papeles principales y practicaron su parte. Primero leyeron el guión de forma que María podía hacerse una idea de cómo se lo sabían, cómo era su pronunciación y su fluidez. Después siguieron con el primer acto y revisaron todas las palabras más difíciles de pronunciar. Leyeron el acto completo un par de veces para poder memorizar su parte y, al final de la lección, ya habían sido capaces de hacer su parte sin leer el guión.

Mientras María hacía esto, el resto de nosotros nos reunimos con el grupo de Graciela en el teatro donde preparamos un juego. Nuestro objetivo era ayudar a los niños con el deletreo de las palabras que eran más difíciles de escribir en el test. El juego empezó dividiéndoles en dos grupos, cada grupo tenía que escribir una letra por flashcard con el objetivo de formar las palabras elegidas previamente. Cada grupo estaba organizado en una fila y tenían que correr para coger una flashcard del otro equipo y dejarla sobre la mesa para crear la palabra.
En nuestro último día, como asistentes de Graciela, dividimos las tareas de nuevo: María fue con el niño y la abuela y estuvieron la hora actuando y revisando el guión. El resto de nosotros ayudamos a tres niños a leer sus guiones y corregir su entonación y pronunciación.
Para finalizar, podemos decir que los niños no fueron los únicos que aprendieron con esta experiencia, nosotras también. Lo más importante fue que aprendimos a comunicarnos mejor con los pequeños de forma que nos pudieran entender. Tenemos que tener en cuenta que no tenemos el mismo nivel de inglés que ellos, por lo que necesitamos ajustarnos a su nivel. Esta experiencia nos ayudará a saber cómo adaptar nuestro idioma a las distintas situaciones que tengamos que afrontar en la vida.
Estamos muy agradecidas de vuestro seguimiento a través de este viaje que esperamos que hayáis disfrutado tanto como nosotras. Ha sido una experiencia corta y aun así espléndida pero, tristemente, ha llegado a su fin. Habiendo dicho y hecho todo, “Insiders” dice adiós.
